Hybrid work promises flexibility, but when those promises disappear, the impact can be severe—especially for employees managing chronic health conditions. A recent Abbott endometriosis dismissal case in Ireland has put a sharp spotlight on how workplace policies, probation rules and disability rights can collide in modern science and technology-led industries.
The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ordered Abbott Ireland Ltd to pay €25,000 to a scientist after finding that her dismissal amounted to discrimination on disability grounds. While the adjudicator did not conclude that the company failed to accommodate her during employment, the ruling found that the dismissal itself proceeded without adequate consideration of her medical condition and possible alternatives.
